Vivian Crawford, 97, of Langdon, ND passed away on Monday, September 12, 2016 at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon.

Vivian was born September 27, 1918 in Langdon, ND to Tilden and Alma (Chaput) Crawford. She attended St. Alphonsus Catholic School, graduating in 1937. Vivian then entered nursing school at Mercy Hospital held in conjunction with Valley City STC and graduated in 1941. Before enlisting in the Army Nursing Corps at Salt Lake City, she worked her first nursing position at Itasca State Hospital in Grand Rapids, MN. She worked as an industrial nurse for Remington Arms until her paperwork was completed and then was commissioned 1st Lieutenant in the Nursing Corp for two years in the US. In 1946, she returned to Langdon to live with her mother and worked at the Mercy Hospitals in Langdon and Devils Lake until 1952 when she became county health nurse until 1967. After her mother’s death in 1967, Vivian took over the management of her mother’s various rental properties. She continued her nursing profession as an industrial nurse at the missile base near Nekoma from 1974-75.

Vivian and her long-time friend, Rose Mullarkey, enjoyed traveling. They visited Rose’s home country of Ireland and also went to many southern states in the winter. She loved entertaining and took pride in setting a beautiful table with her old country rose china.

Vivian was a member of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, St. Alphonsus Church and Catholic Daughters, and the White Caps, an early county nursing organization.

Vivian is survived by many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Richard, and friends George Mastel & Rose Mullarkey.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2016 with visitation starting at 12:00 p.m. and a 1:00 p.m. Rosary at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon, ND.
