Thomas L. Butler Jr., 69, passed away in his sleep at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City, ND on March 18, 2018.
Tom was born in Grand Forks, ND on July 5, 1948 to Thomas D. and Yvonne Butler. He went to grade school through his senior year in Cavalier, graduating in 1966. Following graduation, Tom attended Moorhead College for one year before joining the United States Navy, where he was a shipÃ¢â¬â¢s photographer. He retired from the Navy on June 1, 1976.
Tom was an avid reader. He enjoyed listening to classic rock and roll music, and he really enjoyed debating current political and social events.
Tom is survived by his mother, Yvonne, Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier; his brother, Lanny (Diane) Butler, Crozet, Virginia and their children Elisabeth Butler and Andy Butler; and sister, Deb (Rick) Torkelson, Washburn, ND, and their daughters Amy (Brandon) Miller and Katie Torkelson.
Tom was preceded in death by his father Thomas D. Butler and brother Jeffrey Butler.
No services are planned in Cavalier. A graveside service will be held for Tom at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials may be given in memory of Tom to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery Foundation (NDVCF) 1825 46th Street, Mandan, ND 58554.
Sending my deepest sympathy to all of Tom's family. He will always be remembered fondly as one of my classmates @ CHS. May God be especially close to all of you at this sad time.

I am so sorry to hear this. I was blessed to graduate from high school with Tom and I have known the Butlers my whole life in school and church. What a wonderful family and I wish comfort and peace to Mrs. Butler and her children. God bless you all.
