Susan Carol Longtin was born on May 4th, 1945, in Grafton, ND to Lester and Mildred (Zieffler) Hughes. She grew up in rural Backoo, ND attending the country schoolhouse through 8th grade and then attending high school in Cavalier, ND.
She fell in love with Clair Longtin and they were united in marriage on November 4th, 1961. Susie and Clair set off for adventure following their nuptials, first making their home in California where they welcomed the first of five boys. They later moved to Montana and then to Walhalla where she and Clair lived for a few years prior to them moving to her childhood home in Backoo, ND where she and Clair raised their five sons and where she lived up until the time of her passing.
Susie shared her many gifts and talents, working at the Nursing Home in Cavalier, where she exemplified love for others, compassion and kindness as a CNA. During her tenure at the home, she was recognized as CNA of the year, where they honored her gentle nature, authenticity, and genuine compassion for others! Her warm heart and kind smile were day brighteners for many! Following her time at the home, Susie and Clair raised milking cows for many years, working tirelessly with their boys to do so.
In 1983 the “No Place Saloon” was contrived, built with ingenuity, sweat and creativity by Susie, Clair and their boys. The “No Place Saloon” served as a place and space where many fond memories were made for the Longtins and all their patrons. There were many a night where Susie could be found working (and possibly singing and dancing) while the Valley Ramblers, Sweet Freedom or Westerners played. Following the sale of the No Place Saloon, Susie began working at Pembina County Memorial Hospital in Housekeeping where she later became a supervisor, a position she held up until her retirement in June of 2017.
Susie celebrated her retirement doing the things she loved-hanging out with family, gardening, canning, and cooking. She was an extraordinary cook and baker with her boys noting the many loaves of bread made and consumed during their time at home. Susie lived the premise of “the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach” spoiling many with her delicious, home cooked meals made with love!
As a young woman, Susie was an adventurist, racing snowmobiles skillfully and enjoying the “need for speed”. Her grandchildren relished the many stories Susie told of her racing days. Susie also had a gift for “playing the spoons” and could often be found “playing the spoons” at various family events. Susie loved her boys and shared many a story about the various broken items in her home that her boys had worked hard to “glue back together” noting her fond memories of “how” things were broken which usually involved a wrestling match of sorts. Susie reflected fondly on those memories, laughing at all the shenanigans and family time shared with Clair and her five boys. Unbeknownst to some, Susie had a great sense of humor, coming up with the greatest “one liners” when everyone least expected. Susie was a kind and genuine soul who will be missed immensely by her family.
Her family recently celebrated her 80th birthday this past May with many grandchildren, family neighbors, and friends in attendance. She was so surprised and the expression on her face will be forever etched in our hearts. She too went on an RV adventure mid-summer where she had the “time of her life” seeing grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Susie leaves behind a husband, Clair; 3 sons, Marvin (Angela) Cavalier, ND; Mike (Candis) Devils Lake, ND; and John (Lisa) Umatilla, FL; daughter in law, Kathy Longtin, Fargo, ND; sister in law, JoAnne Hughes; sister in law, Iris Longtin; and grandchildren, Morgan, Cameo, and Ty Longtin; Jordan, Alexis, Weston Longtin; Levi and Layne Longtin; Corey Longtin; Kyle Longtin; Garrett Longtin; Mason Longtin; Jenni Longtin Corrick and all their significant others; and 19 beautiful great grandchildren.
