Selma I. Stevens

Selma Stevens, 91, of Langdon, ND passed away May 19, 2017 at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon, ND.

Selma was born on May 16, 1926 to John and Clara (Gerth) Hemminger at R.M. of Stanley, Manitoba, Canada. She came to the US with her family when she was eleven years old. They lived on a farm near Dresden, ND. Selma rented a room in Langdon and worked as a tray girl at Mercy Hospital while attending high school. She graduated from Langdon High School in 1945.

Selma was united in marriage to Allen Stevens at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church on October 30, 1945. They resided in a cook car while Allen worked at the John Bata farm during their first year of marriage then moved to the William Stevens farm where Selma worked as a farm wife and mother of seven children. In 1980, Selma and Allen moved in to their home in Langdon. Selma moved to Maple Manor Care Center in September of 2010.

Selma was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Cavalier County Senior Citizens Center, and a pinochle club. Although she grew up Lutheran, Selma became a devout Catholic at the time of their marriage and enjoyed attending daily mass and prayer group. Selma enjoyed knitting, crocheting, ceramics, fishing, playing cards, and working jigsaw puzzles. She was a great cook and made use of the bounty of their large gardens by canning and freezing fruits and vegetables.

Selma is survived by two daughters: Sharon (John) Bear of Chanhassen, MN, Linda (Rick) Zeis of West Fargo, ND; five sons: David (Ann) Stevens of Grand Forks, ND, Dennis Stevens of Bottineau, ND, Rodney (Ruth) Stevens of Lakota, ND, Jeffrey Stevens of Langdon, Douglas (Connie) Stevens of Allen, TX; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Selma was preceded in death by her parents; husband Allen; and siblings: Eleanor Zarn, Edna Timian, and Albert Hemminger.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 26, 2017 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon, ND. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 25, 2017 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. Rosary and 7:00 p.m. prayer service at St. Alphonsus Church and for one hour prior to service time at the church on Friday. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Langdon, ND.
