Robert B. Mitchell, 92, formerly of Crystal, ND, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, ND. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 10, 2006, at Crystal United Methodist Church, Crystal, ND. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 9, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation at the church for one hour before the time of service. Burial will take place in the Crystal Memorial Cemetery.
Bob was born near Crystal on December 31, 1913, to Alfred and Mabel (Bertelson) Mitchell. He graduated from Crystal High School in 1929.
On June 17, 1951, he married Laura Fleming in Grand Forks. He farmed near Crystal until retiring in 1980. Apart from several winters spent at Parkwood Place in Grand Forks, Bob and Laura lived on their Crystal farm until 2004, when he moved to Luther Memorial Home.
Bob was an active member of Crystal United Methodist Church and served both as Chairman of the Board and Lay Leader. He was president of the Red River Valley Potato Growers' Association in 1959-1960. He was president of the Crystal School Board and served as the first president of the Valley School Board when the Crystal and Hoople school districts combined in 1968. In 1999, he was honored for 25 years of service on the board of North Valley Water Association.
Bob is survived by three children, Robert (Grayce) Mitchell of Seattle, WA; Sheila (Stephen) Dacus of Overland Park, KS; and Stuart Mitchell of Grand Forks, five grandchildren: Carrie Mitchell of Baltimore, MD; Emily Mitchell of Walla Walla, WA; Laura (Timothy) Wooten of Raleigh, NC; and Caitlin and Andrew Dacus of Overland Park, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Donald; his sister, Ellen Erlendson; and his wife Laura, who died in 2005.
The family asks that memorials be given to Crystal United Methodist Church, Crystal Memorial Cemetery Association, or a charity of your choice.
