Robert Jennings, 97, of Langdon, ND, passed away Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon.
Robert James Jennings was born to Albert and Lillian (Dunford) Jennings on March 19, 1929, on the family farm near Langdon, ND. He was the second of two children. He attended grade school in Harvey Township. His schooling was interrupted at the age of 15 by the sudden death of his father. His "mum" and he held onto the farm his grandfather, James, homesteaded in the 1800’s. Bob spent the next 84 years loving and working the land. Except for his brief stay in Maple Manor, he lived his entire life on the site where he was born. Bob was united in marriage to Myrtle Mutcher on June 25, 1955, at St. John's Lutheran Church near Dresden, ND. To this marriage, one son, Kenneth Lowell, was born.
Bob’s Christian faith was very important to him, and he served the Lord in various ministries at Stillwell Community Church, Evangelical United Brethren Church and Emmanuel Evangelical Church in Langdon. He was active in Gideons International and served in various capacities at Emmanuel. He loved his church family.
He told stories about his boyhood and the many hours he spent in the woods picking berries and enjoying nature. Jimmy Sheltra, a Native American living in the coulee near his farm, taught him hunting and trapping skills. Bob enjoyed Myrtle’s family, and pinochle was the entertainment at family gatherings. Nothing gave him more joy than working alongside his son and two grandchildren. They spent days together in the spring fixing fence in the coulees before turning the cattle out to pasture. He was thrilled that his grandson, Taylor, was carrying on the legacy of their five-generation family farm.
Bob is survived by his wife, Myrtle, of 71 years; son Ken (Sally) of Langdon, ND; grandchildren: Taylor (Jocelyn) Jennings and Larissa Jennings; and great-grandchildren: Anna, Sophie and Elise Jennings. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Helen, and brother-in-law Ron Olson.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Emmanuel Evangelical Church in Langdon, ND, with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Harvey Center Cemetery, rural Langdon.
