Lyla Herrud

May 1, 1925 — October 11, 2017

Lyla Herrud, 92, of Langdon, ND, passed away on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon, ND.

Lyla Eilene Olson was born May 1, 1925, in Langdon, ND. She was the 7th of nine children born to Ole and Oleanna (Ingebrigtsen) who emigrated from Norway. She grew up and attended school in Langdon, and after graduating from Langdon High School in 1944, she enlisted in the Navy. There she worked as a teletype operator in Norfolk, VA. Following her discharge two years later, Lyla returned to Langdon and worked at JC Penney. She met her sweetheart, Roy Herrud, and married him on April 2, 1948. They celebrated 61 years of marriage before Roy died in 2009. They owned their home on 9th Street for over 55 years and also Herrud Jewelry on Main Street in Langdon.

Lyla was a stay-at-home mom and very proud of her home. She excelled at baking and cooking and took good care of her family. She enjoyed reading, music, and growing roses. Lyla also loved sports, especially basketball. Both she and Roy were passionate about golfing and spent countless hours at the Langdon Country Club. Lyla went to many golf tournaments with her friends; she even made a hole-in-one while golfing in Florida with Roy during their retirement years. Lyla assisted Roy at the jewelry store for many years. She belonged to the Langdon Country Club and American Legion Post 98.

Lyla was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. She trusted God to take her from her earthly home to her heavenly home and believed that Jesus was her Lord and Savior. She adored her grandchildren: Matthew, Andrew, Mallory, and Kari, and they all knew that Grandma loved them. Lyla loved to play ball with the boys and being silly with the girls! She bravely fought her battle with cancer to the very end, showing love and appreciation to all who cared for her.

Lyla is survived by her children: Alan (Connie) of Langdon and Nancy (Steve) Staloch of Bloomington, MN; grandchildren: Matthew (Amanda) Herrud of Fargo, ND, Andrew (Jenn) Herrud of Bismarck, ND, Mallory Staloch of Iowa City, IA, and Kari Staloch of Perth, Australia; great-grandchildren: Reese, Cali, Parker, Lyla, and Kiera; brother Murray Olson of Chicago, IL; sister-in-law Doris Olson of Langdon; and many nieces and nephews. Diane Thornton was a niece who was especially loved by Lyla. She also had an â€adopted’ daughter, Elisabeth Kittler, who was from Germany and lived with the Herruds for one year.

Lyla was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; her parents; brothers: Elmer, Albert, Walter, and Regner; and sisters: Doris, Myrtle, and Mabel.

Her family is so grateful for the compassion and love Lyla received from the staff at Maple Manor these past few months.
