Loren Gendreau

Loren L. Gendreau, age 74, formerly of Pembina/Walhalla passed away peacefully after a courageous battle of Alzheimer's, Friday, June 5th, 2026, at Bethany Homes in Fargo, ND. Memorial service will be held on Monday, June 15, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Askew Funeral Home in Walhalla. Visitation will be held one hour before the time of the service. 

Loren was born on September 26th, 1951, at Langdon, ND to Oscar and Emily Beatrice (Carpenter) Gendreau. He was raised in Walhalla, ND where he attended school and lived there throughout his life. Loren worked for the Pembina County Highway Department.

He married Betty Steinke on September 25th, 1984. From this marriage, they had Lindsey and he gained stepchildren Dana and Shannon. He was a very hard worker throughout his life. He had a great passion for nature as well as having a nice home and yard. His hobbies included wearing his blue jeans, playing cards, Yahtzee, bingo, detailing his Chevy trucks in “extra” chrome, sharing his love by teasing, and even though he put on a tough exterior deep down he was a big teddy bear. During his time at Bethany, he was known to be a good guardian, friend and keeping everyone safe. He was honored to be called daddy, papa and grandpa. I am honored to pass down the love of nature to those around me like he did for me.

He is survived by the love of his life, Betty, daughter, Lindsey (David) Hertel, stepchildren: Dana and Shannon, grandchildren: Addison Hertel, Sophia Hertel, Jonathan (Niesha) Steinke, Ashley Steinke, Wyatt (Nixon) Ottem, DesaRae Ottem, great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his sisters: Judynne Bjornson, Carol Salwei, and Linda Thomasson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Emily Beatrice Gendreau, his brothers, Bobby, Clayton, Oliver, Wilbur, his sister Maxine and nephew, Justin.
