LeRoy J. Schanz

LeRoy Schanz, 95, of Langdon, ND, passed away on Monday, May 7, 2018, at Wegdewood Manor in Cavalier, ND.
LeRoy Jacob Schanz was born November 1, 1922, on the family farm in Gordon Township to Jacob and Martha (Ertmann) Schanz. He grew up and attended school in Gordon Township. On October 15, 1946, LeRoy and Grace Penner were married at Bethel Church, rural Langdon, ND. LeRoy farmed and raised livestock on the home farm in Gordon Township, along with his wife, Grace. He was also a custom harvester for over 30 years, which took the family to many states including Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota, resulting in the making of life-long friends of both customers and employees. LeRoy was known by numerous friends and neighbors as “Buddy” and had a repair shop right on the farm. In the late 1980s, he and Grace moved to Langdon, but he didn’t really retire until he was about 88 years old. He just loved to work.
LeRoy and Grace were able to travel in their later years, many times going to California to start their adventures. He loved to do any type of mechanical modifications and even built a car from spare parts on the farm at the age of 13. He was very active in the Emmanuel Evangelical Church, helping to build the church and then serving as a youth leader.
Surviving LeRoy are his children: Aldra Sullivan (Gene) of Langdon, ND, Ricky (Virginia) Schanz of Langdon, ND, Darla (Hugh) Matt of Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren: Brock Sullivan (Nikki), Shawn Sullivan (Stefanie), Kyle (Dawn) Sullivan, Marissa (Alex) Sullivan, Chris (Ana) Tennyson, Darrick Schanz, Bryan (Heather) Schanz, Kristina Stahl (Andy), Natasha (Josh) Cramer, Ariel (Jake) Schmitt; great-grandchildren: Breanna, Deuce, Tristan, Izzie, Micah, Kacey, Aaron, Gracie, Tyra, Daunte, Cali, Charlee, Mariah, Isabella, Gabriel, Alexa, Faith, Piper, Ariana, Zachary, Hannah, Cameron, Jordyn, Jonathan, Carsyn, Mataya, Shali, Devyn, Gabriel, Phoebe; great-great grandchild Hadley; siblings: Eleanora Roder, Dorothy Clark, Doris Bowser, Orlin (Cheri) Schanz; and sister-in-law Joyce Schanz.
LeRoy was preceded in death by wife Grace, his parents, brother Allen, brothers-in-law: Edwin Bowser, Donald Roder, Gordon Clark; sister-in-law Ilene Schanz; and granddaughter-in-law Jenny Sullivan.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Emmanuel Evangelical Church in Langdon, ND. Visitation will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 11, 2018, at Brooks Funeral Home in Langdon. Visitation will also take place one hour prior to service time at the church on Saturday.
