Leona Johnson

Leona Johnson, 100, died on October 3, 2017 at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Alexandria, MN with family and Hospice care.

Leona was born April 4, 1917, to Laura and Mederic Chaput on their home farm. She attended grade school and then St. Alphonsus High School where she graduated in 1936. Leona then moved to Grand Forks to attend Union Commercial Business School. She returned to Langdon to work at the courthouse where she met Myles Johnson whom she married July 10, 1943. To this union four children- Karen, Kaye, Jeff, and Jerry- were born.

Leona enjoyed life with family and friends. She was devoted to her parents, assisting them in their old age. She and Myles enjoyed many travels in the United States (including Hawaii), Europe and Canada. Leona’s many interests were playing golf, playing bridge, curling and being a member of Homemakers, Catholic Daughters, Altar Society and Christian Women. Leona was a hairdresser, a seamstress, and an excellent cook- entertaining many family members and friends at her dining room table.

Three years after Myles’ death in June 2009, Leona moved from Langdon to live in Grand Forks, St. Cloud and Alexandria, MN. Surviving her are her children: Karen (Bob) Karn, Kaye (Merle) Mikkelsen, Jeff (Bev) Johnson and Jerry (Darlene) Johnson, thirteen grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Hilda Wilhelmi; brothers: Tom (Margie), Mederic Jr. and Wilbert as well as her sisters-in-law, Margaret Lorenz and Anna Chaput. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sisters:Eva Moos, Annette Prince, Marie Everson; brothers Sylveo and George; sisters-in-laws; brothers-in-laws and nephews.

She loved her family and will be greatly missed. Memorial gifts are preferred to St. Alphonsus Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Langdon, ND with Rosary at 9:00 a.m. and visitation continuing until the time of service. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Langdon, ND.
