Joyce M. Johnston

Joyce M. Johnston, 68, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at her home in Cavalier. Visitation will be held Friday, August 15, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Everyone is welcome to Sammy's Bar in Cavalier on Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 12:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m. to celebrate Joyce's life.

Joyce Marilyn Johnston was born August 21, 1956, in Cavalier, ND to Clinton and Hulda (Greening) O'Hara. She attended school in Hamilton and graduated in 1974. Joyce worked at the Cavalier Chronicle for a short time before starting a 46-year career at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital. Retiring in May of 2025.

On December 22, 1984, she married Jim Johnston in Cavalier. She bowled women’s league with her sisters at J&H Lanes for many years and enjoyed visiting and having a cold Bud Light or 2 at her favorite spot in Sammy's. Having a conversation with Joyce usually included her beautiful smile and infectious laugh after a quick comeback by her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her sisters: Shirley Ann Keena, Midland TX, Mary Jane (Don) Johnson, Judy McDonald, and sister-in-law, Bonnie (Duane) Deraas all of Cavalier, ND; nieces and nephews, Debbie (Doug) Wilkerson and Rick (Susie) Keena of Midland TX, Tracee Johnson of Cavalier, ND, Brian Johnson of Minot, ND, Candis (Mike) Longtin of Devils Lake, ND, George Jr. (Jamie) McDonald of Reiles Acres, ND, Christopher (Julia) O'Hara of Grafton, ND, Alisha (Darin) Morrison of Big Lake, MN, and Alexander Deraas of Fargo, ND. Also surviving her are 16 great nieces and nephews and 7 great great nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her husband Jim in 2012; parents, Clinton and Hulda; brothers, Bobby O'Hara and Dennis O'Hara; and brothers-in-law, Rodney Keena and George McDonald.
