I considered John a friend during my two plus years in Cavalier when our family moved to support Marvin's work for Bell Laboratories on the radar for the ABM missile site (1972-74). John teased and treated me as an East Coast liberal...but invited me to 'work on the farm' sitting on the back of his tractor learning to plant pine seedlings. He invited our family to dinner, offering our son Danny (then 5) to taste a special family favorite: lizard patties. a North Dakota treat! . I joined a philosophy study group (Ayn Rand, perhaps) listening to tapes and discussing her principles. He always challenged me with a not-so serious twinkle in his eye. He made fun of my strong feminist principles, but he understood my concerns and misgivings about lack of respect for a woman's point of view. We disagreed on many things, but I loved that he would listen, argue the fine points, and then give me a hug or a smile. I think we recognized a similar rebellious spirit in each other! And I bet he will continue to challenge and question everyone in his new place of rest! Bravo John! You will be missed.
