Jerry J. Johnson

Jerry Joe Johnson was born June 2, 1935, in Mountain ND to Gerry and Gudrun (Olafson) Johnson. He attended school in Mountain until the 8th grade when he went on to work in a local auto body shop to repair cars and help support his family.

On June 30, 1956, he married Deloris A Gunlogson in Tioga, ND where they lived for several years during the first North Dakota oil boom. Jerry worked for a while in the oil fields then they moved to Cavalier and raised three sons Frank (Franklin), Gerry (Joe), and Lyndon (Chip). 

He went to work for Mayo Construction building roads and interstate highways across North Dakota and Montana for a career of 62 years. A career he absolutely loved and took great pride in working there as an equipment operator, mechanic, equipment superintendent, and shop manager. In his later years he enjoyed going around the country picking up parts and visiting with people he did business with for many years.

Jerry enjoyed spending time with his family and visiting with friends tinkering in the garage on old lawn mowers, helping friends repair equipment and could not pass up great deals at the local auctions.

Survivors include his son, Chip (Brenda) Johnson Amery, WI; grandchildren: Liana (Ben) Madsen Rockford, IL, Marisa Johnson Minneapolis, MN, Travis (Padee) Johnson La Crosse, WI, Teah (Justin) Johnson, Minneapolis MN; step grandchildren, Tyler (Danna) Drinkwine Somerset WI, and Jake Drinkwine Siren WI, sister-in-law, Judy (Gene) Hamilton, Beach, ND, 10 great grandchildren with another due in October, and many nieces and nephews. Also his beloved dog, Susie.

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Deloris, sons: Frank and Joe; brother, Emil Johnson, sisters: Anna Adams and Freda Clark; brothers-in-law, Darrel Hanson and Art Adams; sisters-in-law, Marlene Johnson, Joyce Hanson, Kathleen Platt

Jerry passed away Monday, June 29, 2026, at Golden Age Manor, Amery WI, with Chip and Brenda at his side.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Lutheran Church in Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held at the church for one hour before the time of services.
