James V. Hansel

James Victor was born April 13, 1946 in Langdon, ND to Joseph and Anna Mae Hansel. He grew up in Langdon and graduated from St. Alphonsus in 1964. After high school, James joined a surveying crew in New York and met Karen Butsko. James and Karen were married on June 24, 1967 in Yonkers, New York. They lived there and in upstate New York before moving to Langdon in 1970 where James worked at Sturlaugson’s Oil and then Erling’s Oil driving the fuel truck. James also helped Neil Evans and Randy Evans on their farms and enjoyed coaching Pee Wee and Little League for many years. James retired in July of 2015 from Erling’s Oil.

James loved to fish and hunt. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his grandkids. Starting with his daughter, Jacki, he would take her or his grandkids to the bakery every Saturday morning for “doughnut day”. James was a big supporter of sporting events, even earning the nickname of “stat man” since he seemed to know all the stats. He was very proud to have 29 years of sobriety. James was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Langdon.

So very sad to hear of the passing of Big Jim. Could always count on seeing him in the dugout or in the stands. He was the first to ask me if I was ok after "my little accident" when I crashed Bobby's motorcyle in your back yard. I'm sure he's at the ball park in heaven!

My thoughts and prayers are with you, Karen, and family. Every time I remember Jim it always revolves around sports and mostly American Legion baseball. We had such great talks and I always looked forward to him trying to outsmart me about sports. A Fun Man, a Man so very proud of his family and one I will remember fondly. God be with you and may his peace help you.

Karen and family, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Jim. He was a wonderful man that always would stop and visit. I really enjoyed getting to know him and your family with our time in Langdon. He was always so proud of his kids and I know if carried over to his grandkids. Take comfort in all the memories you have of him and with him. He will forever be in the hearts of so many. Karen, Jim, Lisa & Jacki, I am so sorry to hear about Jim! We used to "take care of" the back rows in church at Saturday night Mass for years! I know there's nothing I can say to make the pain of loss go away, but know that I am thinking of you with a prayer. Jean
