Grant W. Nelson of Langdon, N.D., and St. George, Utah, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the age of 98. He was survived by his wife of 70 years, Betty L. Nelson; his three daughters, Julie Nelson of St. George, UT; Gail (Robert) Stokes of St. George, UT; Carrie (Jay) Carter of Taylorsville, UT; and their two grandchildren Ceanne Carter of Murray, UT, and Austin Carter of Taylorsville, UT.
Born on August 31, 1927, in Osnabrock, N.D., Grant was known among family and friends for his love of music, master penmanship, and commitment to serving others. His artistry in music included his love of singing, music composition, and performing. One of his proudest accomplishments was composing two songs: “Sing of North Dakota,” a tribute to his home state, and “Pledge of Honor,” a tribute to the American flag.
Grant was a World War II veteran, serving in Germany from 1946-1948. After his Army service, he returned to Osnabrock and married Betty L. Baker on August 21, 1955. They purchased the Sather farm near Osnabrock, where they farmed for 46 years. Grant and Betty spent 30 winters in Bullhead City, Arizona, where they forged new friendships and enjoyed the activities of their retirement community.
Grant, a member of United Lutheran Church in Langdon and a former member of Dovre Lutheran Church in Osnabrock, cherished his faith in God, service to our country, hard work, and his commitment to family. He was fiercely independent, self-reliant, and always did things his way. His generosity taught him the importance of passing on gifts to benefit others. For 20 years, he dedicated his gift of music by singing to residents in nursing homes. His final performance was at the age of 92.
He was preceded in death by parents, Henry and Bertine (Ruud) Nelson; and siblings: Norris (Nellie) Nelson, Gladys (Richard) Lorenz, Thelma (Robert) Van Horn, Harley (Nona) Nelson, Eunice (Richard) Egan, and Johnny Nelson.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2026, at Brooks Funeral Home in Langdon, ND, with visitation starting at Noon. Inurnment will be at Union Cemetery in Osnabrock, ND.
