Geraldine Tholkes, 98, of Langdon, ND, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2020, at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon.
Geraldine Theresa was born August 30, 1921, in Munich, ND, to Michael and Martha (Janowski) Wirth. She graduated from Munich High School in 1939. She spent some time living at home until moving to Devils Lake, ND, in 1942 where she worked as a clerk at Ramsey Drug. She and Joseph Tholkes were married October 29, 1945, and made their first home in Calio, ND. They ran the Calio General Store for a couple years before moving to a farm near Clyde, ND, in 1949. Geraldine and Joe farmed and raised their family on the farm then moved to Langdon in 1966. After retirement, they were fortunate to be able to spend about 20 winters in Mesa, AZ. Gerry lived in Wheatland Estates for a short time before moving over to Maple Manor Care Center where she really enjoyed living.
Gerry loved bowling and curling in her younger days. She often baked and decorated cakes for others and made the BEST brownies. She enjoyed playing cards and going to all the rummage sales and finding treasures and useful items for herself, her children, and her grandchildren. Gerry loved hearing about the activities of her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and hosted many family gatherings at both the farm and in Langdon. She was a Catholic Daughter and a member of St. Alphonsus Altar Society. She also was involved in Homemakers Club.
Surviving Gerry are her children: Joan Hall of Devils Lakes, ND, Ron (Linda) Tholkes of West Fargo, ND, Carol (Dennis) Throndset of Langdon, and Renae (Art Heigaard) Tholkes of Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren: Steph (Roger) McArthur, Kirsten (Tony) Duval, Kelly (Angela) Hall, Pat (Jonna) Hall, Leah (Robb) Schmidt, Rochelle Tholkes, Dawn (Stoney) Kruk, Jennifer (Trevor) Romfo, Andrea (John) Maus, Jamie (Keith) Mercer, and Chris Girodat; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandsons; sisters: Martha Rose Henderson of Langdon, ND, and Lois Dawley of Munich, ND; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joe; son-in-law Tom Hall; grandson Justin Kruk; and siblings Victor (Ester) Wirth, Lester (Leona and Rose) Wirth, Loretta (Marcel Mathieu and Alphonse) Hiltner, Francis Wirth, Beatrice (Bud) Houghton, Norman (Nora) Wirth, Valery (Harold) Hudson and Madelyn (Michael) Hoffmann; and brothers-in-law: David Henderson and Vincent Dawley.
Memorials can be directed to Maple Manor Care Center or Cavalier County Library, both located in Langdon. Please do not send flowers at this time.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held and live-streamed on St. Alphonsus Catholic Church's website (https://www.stalphonsuslangdon.com) at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2020.
