Edna Kakela

Edna Kakela, 90, of Langdon, ND, passed away Friday, June 7, 2019, at Pembina County Memorial Hospital in Cavalier, ND.

Mary Edna Broderick was born October 17, 1928, in Towner County to Lawrence and Bertha (Held) Broderick. She graduated from Rock Lake High School in 1947 as the salutatorian. On November 27, 1947, Edna married Wilfred Kakela in Starkweather, ND.  They made their home in Rock Lake, ND, before moving to Langdon to run Work and Kakela John Deere Implement. They later started farming and raised their five children in Langdon. Edna enjoyed art, especially drawing, and curling in her younger years. She was a talented seamstress and an amazing cook. She and her husband, Kak, were members of a square dance group and loved to dance. In her later years, she enjoyed playing Bingo. She had a strong faith and a deep love for St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. Time spent with her family was very important to her, and she was able to attend many of her grandchildren’s activities and events.

Surviving Edna are her children: Myrna (Tim) Devine of Langdon, Mark (Darby) Kakela of Langdon, Kathy (Keith) Lorenz of Langdon, Steve Kakela of Langdon, and Rochelle (Dale) Kovarik of Park River, ND; twelve grandchildren: Michael (Raquel) Berg, Derek (Stephanie) Devine, Justin Devine (Tina Ross), Bryan (Kacy) Kakela, Brett Kakela, Brooke (Brandon) Downs, Kyle (Andrea) Lorenz, Korey (Katie) Lorenz, Katie (Doug) Johnson, Rudy Kakela, Brady Kovarik, and Erin Kovarik; eighteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wilfred “Kak”, and brother Daniel (Viola) Broderick.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2019, at St. Alphonsus Church in Langdon, ND. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service on Thursday, June 13, 2019, at Brooks Funeral Home in Langdon, and for one hour prior to service time at the church on Friday. Burial will be at Rock Lake Community Cemetery in Rock Lake, ND.
