Duane E. Watts

July 7, 1941 — June 15, 2025

formerly of Neche

Duane Earl Watts, 83, a hardworking, kind-hearted man with deep roots in Pembina County, ND, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2025, surrounded by family at Quiet Oaks Hospice House.

Duane was born on July 7, 1941, on the Schweitzer farm near Pembina, North Dakota, to Oran and Rosie (Schweitzer) Watts. He was the younger of two boys, growing up alongside his brother Gale. The boys traveled by two-wheeled horse cart, driven by their trusty horse Madge, to a one-room schoolhouse in their early years before Duane attended and graduated from Neche Public High School in 1961.

From a young age, Duane developed a strong work ethic while helping his father run the family farm. He was also active in 4-H, where he raised lambs and sheep. He played high school basketball in his canvas Converse sneakers and spent many memorable hours with friends on Main Street in the area fondly known as “Little Canada.”

In March 1962, Duane enlisted in the U.S. Army, completing his basic training and schooling in Missouri before being stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, where he served in the motor pool. After his service in 1964, he returned to the family farm.

Duane married Nancy Kain on June 17, 1966. They were blessed with 59 years together.

Duane’s career took a turn when he stopped at the local Cenex for a fill-up on the way to a job interview. Instead, George Winkler hired him on the spot. Duane went on to earn his propane delivery license and spent the rest of his career faithfully serving the residents of Pembina County. He retired after decades of dedicated service.

To this day, Duane is a member of Post #0242 Neche American Legion and proudly served as a volunteer firefighter with the Neche Fire Department.

After retirement, Duane and Nancy moved to Bemidji, MN, and later built a home in St. Cloud, MN, where they spent their later years together.

Duane lived a full and active life. He enjoyed softball, raising and riding horses, snowmobiling, square dancing, ATV riding, golfing, and fishing at the cabin. However, his greatest joy was found in cheering on his daughters, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren at their sporting events. He was always their biggest fan.

Duane is survived by his wife Nancy, beloved daughter Angie Stockton (Kirk), granddaughter Kendra Trupe (Chris), great grandsons Cohen, Elliott and Liam, grandson Tyler Stockton, daughter Lori Dingmann (Rick), grandsons Dane and Evan Dingmann, and his loyal granddog, Tucker.

Duane’s legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering support will live on through his family and the many lives he touched. He will be dearly missed.

A private family Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
