Clif held high school science, math, and driver education teaching positions in three North Dakota towns: South Heart, Linton, and Walhalla. He then held several science-related jobs including ones at the local ethanol plant, Simplot, and the Cavalier Air Force Station as a civilian. He was active in the community distributing commodities and serving on the Pembilier Nursing Center board, Cavalier housing board, Ministerial Association of Walhalla (treasurer), as a Gideon, as a deacon, song leader, and Sunday School teacher in his church.
