Betty A. Rinde formerly of St. Thomas, ND passed away Thursday, July 7, 2022 at the Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton, ND. under the care of hospice. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 11, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held for one hour before the time of services.
Betty Ann Bestland was born August 21, 1928 at Crystal, ND to Martin and Myrtle (Hunter) Bestland. She grew up at Crystal and graduated from Crystal High School. Betty attended Jamestown College, then returned to Grafton, ND where she worked at the Register of Deeds Office in the Walsh County Court House.
On November 6, 1949, she married Robert N. Rinde at the Federated Church in Grafton. They lived and farmed in the St. Thomas area for 60 years. In 2010, they moved to Parkwood Place in Grand Forks, ND. Bob and Betty wintered in Coronado, CA and Fountain Hills, AZ. Betty moved to her apartment in Leisure Estates in Grafton, ND in April of 2022. Betty was an avid reader and also enjoyed embroidery, cross word puzzles and puzzles. She also enjoyed traveling with trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and Norway, visiting her sisters in Colorado and Texas, and attending Bob’s Navy reunions.
She served as State President of the Republican Women and was also a member of the North Dakota State Library Board, United Methodist Women in St. Thomas, St. Thomas Lyceum Club, St. Thomas Legion Auxiliary, and local Red Hats. Betty and Bob enjoyed volunteering for Meals on Wheels and she was also a volunteer at the Parkwood Place Library.
Betty is survived by four daughters: Ruth Lawrence, Eagan, MN, Susan Rinde, Overland Park, KS, Elizabeth (Roger) Thompson, St. Thomas, ND, and Patricia Rinde, Jamestown, ND; grandchildren: Emily Lawrence (Scott Carlson), Anne Lawrence (Ryan O’Rourke), Nicholas Delorme (Kirstin), Elizabeth Delorme (Jon Hetts), Andrew Thompson (Jennifer), and James Thompson (Mary Beth); great-grandchildren: Charlotte Carlson, Colin Carlson, Liam Delorme, Noella Delorme, Huey Hetts, Molly Thompson, Violet Thompson, Ethan Thompson, Mason Thompson, and Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Thompson.
Also surviving are her siblings: Kay Walstad, Molly (Myron) Kemnitz, Ruth (Bill) Brown, Sandy (Garvin) Stevens; sisters-in-law: Shirley Rinde and Marjorie Haggart; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Robert, sons-in-law: Jerry Lawrence, Ron Delorme and Dan Murphy; sisters-in-law: Dorothy Zimmerman and Joyce Lowe, and brothers-in-law: William Haggart, Vincent Lowe, James Rinde, and Wayne Walstad.
