Agnes McLeod

d. March 14, 2017

Agnes McLeod, 88, of Neche, ND, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Memorial service will be held Saturday, March 18, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Walhalla- Park Center Presbyterian Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 17th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service at the Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier, ND.
Agnes was born on January 17, 1929, in the Mennonite village of Neuhorst, Manitoba. Because her mother died when Agnes was only 7 years old, Agnes and her siblings were raised by their father and extended family in that village and also received their education there. On July 25, 1947, Agnes married William Kenneth McLeod, and they made their home on the family farm west of Neche. Agnes maintained her home there until her death.
Agnes and Kenneth were parents to five children. Agnes worked very hard all her life. Gardening, cattle raising, canning, cooking, baking, washing, housekeeping and assisting with the farming operation were all part of her daily activities. As the children grew up and left home, Agnes went to work for Bjornstad Potato Farms where she worked for 13 years before retiring.
In her later years, Agnes enjoyed many activities of a retiree. She was front and center of family get-togethers. She went on many camping excursions and trips. She enjoyed time spent with family and friends. She was known for her homemade buns, doughnuts, potato salad and lefse, which she made for family gatherings and shared with friends. Her family enjoyed the many wonderful holiday meals that she lovingly prepared.
Agnes was actively involved in the Walhalla Presbyterian Church, Neche Senior Citizens, and Degree of Honor Society. She could always be counted on to bring more than her share of food to any gathering and to help with set up and clean up at those activities. Summers were spent in her vegetable and flower gardens, and she took pride in keeping them weed-free. Under her watchful eye, many of her grandchildren and great grandchildren have developed her green thumb. Agnes kept a yearly calendar on which she carefully marked the birthdays or other special days of all her family and friends. The list was long, but everyone listed got a card when their special day rolled around. Her kindness and generosity knew no bounds.
Agnes is survived by her daughters, Arlene (Doug) Herzog, Grand Forks; and Deborah (Jeffrey) Stark, Cavalier; and sons, Larry (Julie) McLeod, Olympia, Washington; Kelly (Kris) McLeod, Neche; and a daughter-in-law, Karen McLeod, Cavalier. She also leaves to mourn 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her son, Allen McLeod; grandchildren, Jeremy McLeod, and Amanda McLeod; and her parents and siblings.
